Mapping the Soul of a Spirit That Won't Quit

Original Date: 2003.05.31 :: The Music Made Use

I'm still wondering if there really is truth to the saying, "Happy cheese comes from happy cows." After yesterday among the funniest things I've seen is a cow skipping through a meadow. But it sure did look happy.

Last night we stayed in Bordeaux, France to avoid having to ride the trains at night. Part of the point of all of our train trips is to see and experience the countries first hand. It could easily turn out that our single night in Bordeaux may be our only night / day in France (assuming the rail strike on June 2 is a given). This thought weighs heavily on my mind today.

As an aside, there is a really cute Spanish girl on the train. I'd love to see her in all black or some urban BDUs.

Anyway about France. Bordeaux was under extensive construction near the rail station / hotel. It was extremely hot. Combine that with our only language / cultural familiarity being Redwood's uncanny ability to quickly learn from English to any other language books, it is amazing we dared to leave the hotel room. It is even more amazing we found a genuine French restaurant.

While wandering through what looked like a not upscale part of town we heard some good techno / industrial music coming from an apartment. Across the street was a small bar with a menu that piqued our curiosity. After agreeing that the music was a sign from GOD, we decided to try the restaurant.

Our 7 Euro meal started with table wine (local good stuff) and a yummy soup. Our next course consisted of delicious tomatoes and cucumber slices along with three ham dishes! Oh yeah, there was a huge basket of French bread for us to share.

Although our waitress spoke no English, she had amazing patience. But when it was obvious that the language barrier was hindering our selection of our next dish, the elderly man at the next table offered to translate. SO instead of fish (which I hate), we had steak and French Fries (the real kind with mustard on the top). Yummy!

Desert was ice cream.

[NOTE: I'm now convinced that France is full of wonderful places to eat.]
