The Two Towers

Nearly everyday, I read a San Francisco based goth email fluff list. Sometimes there is valuable information posted to the list, most of the time it is just fluff and fun. Yay for fun stuff!

Anyway, this morning somebody posted a link to a discussion where people were offended by J.R.R. Tolkien's choice of title for his second Lord of the Rings book: The Two Towers.

Right, my first reaction was: "OMG! Somebody needs a brain!" Um, I'll explain, because there is a remote chance that somebody someday somewhere will bother to read my diary and not have ever read Tolkien's masterpiece. Tolkien is dead. He has been for a long, long time (since about 1973). He was born long before that (1890s). He wrote the Lord of the Rings books in the mid 1950s.

Construction on the World Trade Center began around 1966. It was opened in 1973.

So Where Are Brains Required?

The point here is that it is stupid to think that a book written 10 years before the construction had any connection with the World Trade Center. It gets better too. The two towers in Tolkien's book were in totally different places.

Basically I'm always amazed at the degree to which people will jerk their knees. In this case, it has since been suggested to me that the original rumour of protests were started as a troll. Basically somebody wanted to make a statement about knee-jerk over reactions and political correctness. But I wouldn't be surprised if by the time that the film opens up that the same people who swear that "Under God" was always in the US Pledge of Allegiance (it was not BTW ... it was added in the 1950s to fight godless communists by Eisenhower), will probably mount a serious protest.

I wish I could move to a colony of smart human beings. Where is that place?
